Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful piece of James River, Virginia Stoneware.
It is a piece from the Four Mile Creek area bearing decoration common to that area. See Eric C. Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia: 19th Century Stoneware from the Lower James River Valley, pp. 93-94 (shown above).
Circa 1830-1840, this beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form with Tooled Grooved Rim for Ease of Tying a Cover Over the Top, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accents at the Handle Terminals, and a Fern Decoration on Both Side. Stands 9 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. A 2 1/2" vertical line at the bottom of one side wrapping under and across the base. Not visible inside. No rim or base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
