Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this spectacular 3 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features a Larger Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Classic Norton Floral Bouquet Executed with a Slip Cup Using Dark and Shiny Cobalt. The floral boasts leaves, buds, blossoms, swirls and dots going in all direcctdions. Lots of movement to captivate the eye. Stands 15 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A couple of 1/8" nibbles on the floral and a horizontal scratch on the shoulder on each side as shown. That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
Truly a fine example of decorated Bennington stoneware.
