Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this exquisite 1 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar with Bold Florals.
It was made and stamped by "J. Keister & Co., Strasburg, VA." Jeremiah Keister made pottery in Strasburg from 1857 to 1870 (H. E. Comstock, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Regiion, pp. 289-291).
Dating around 1860, this beauty features an Semi-Ovoid Form, Thick Tooled Rim with a Groove for Ease of Tying a Cover Over the Top, the Pottery Stamp, and Two Large Brushed Cobalt Florals. The floral on teh front features a leafy stem with two small blossoms at the base and a large one at the tip. The floral on the reverse features a stem with two different kinds of leaves and a large blossom at the end. Stands 11 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Two chips on the rim (1/2", 5/8"), and seven small chips in the thin bottom ring of the tooled rim (1/8" to 3/8"). That's it! No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A vertical 2" drying/firing line on the bottom edge in the making (closeup).
