Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Jar "From James Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA."
James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features a Top to Bottom Mainly Freehand Decoration! From the top down are two straight stripes framing the rim, a wavy stripe flowing across the shoulder, freehand vining cascading across the top of the body, the pottery advertising in the middle, and the freehand watchspring 2 flanked by long dashes and underscored by a straight stripe at the bottom. Stands 11 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. A very, very fine star-shaped hairline on the bottom with short legs coming up 3" on the right side (closeup 1), 1 1/2" on the front (closeup 2), and 1 1/2" on the right side (closeup 3). Extremely tight--the jar had to be turned a certain way even to photograph them. Otherwise, no rim or base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
