Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Stunning 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton, his cousin Edward Norton, and his son, Luman who worked together in the family pottery from 1859-1861 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Double Thistle Decoration in Bright Bennington Cobalt Blue. The floral has an array of leaves at the base that support two thistle flowers and a center iris-like flower. The artist impresses us with his decorating skill! Stands 13 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. Two flat chips on top of the spout (1/4"; 1/2") and one on the side (1/4"). Three chips on the underside at the edge in the back (1/4" to 1/2"). That's it! No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. An exceptionally clean example.
