Item 6369

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Stoneware Crock made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."

This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).

This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Large Basket of Flowers Executed with a Slip Cup.  A swirl blossom occupies the left sided and a huge open flower with swirl center occupies the right side.  The open flower is 7" across!  The cobalt is dark and shiny like we have come to expect from Bennington stoneware.  Measures 13" tall and 13" wide across the top.

Good Condition. A narrow 1 1/2" chip inside the rim.  Three chips outside the rim- two above the left handle and one near the right handle.  Two hairlines:  4" on left side at the bottom that wraps under to the bottom center (closeup 1) and 5" from the rim on the back by the right handle (closeup 2).  No inner rim or base chips, stains, or restoration.  Two drying lines in the making-  4" inside the front (inside picture) and 6" in the back that shows 3" outside (closeups 2 & 3).
