Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Classic Norton Double Thistle Decoration Poised Above a Bed of Leaves. The light glaze provides a delightful contrast with the bright and shiny cobalt! Stands 11 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Two 1/8" nibbles on the inner lid seating ring, a 1/4" chip inside the rim, a narrow 1" chip on the bottom at the edge, and a small stain on the front left. No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks or restoration. A 1/4" kiln touch in the bottom of the leaves in the making.
