Item 11404
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this 4 Gallon Pot stamped "Ithaca, N.Y."
This is surely the mark of the potter James Macumber who ran the pottery in Ithaca with several partners from 1864-1890 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 72).
Circa 1870, this jar features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and Two Folk Art Birds on Floral Branches. Strong cobalt applied with a slip cup. Measures 12 1/2" tall and 12" wide across the top.
The cobalt decoration is intact, but obviously there is inactive glaze loss. Three hairlines from the rim: 4" front center, 5" behind the left handle, and 5" on the back center. Surface drying lines inside in the making. Restorable.
