Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 6 Gallon Jar whose decoration makes it easy to attribute to the Isaac Hewitts, Excelsior Works, Rices Landing, Pennsylvania."
Hewitt ran his pottery in Rices Landing, PA in the 1860's and 1870's (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 158-59).
This beauty features a Large Size and Top to Bottom Freehand Decoration in the Typical Hewitt Manner. From the top down are two straight and one wavy stripe across the shoulder, freehand vining with two large fushsia blossoms across the middle, a straight stripe framed by wavy stripes below the vining, the capacity number flanked by X's, and a wavy and straight stripe at the bottom. Additional cobalt accent at the handle terminals. Stands 17 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Light staining near the top. That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
