Item 6039
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this superb 2 Gallon Decorated Stoneware Jar. While stamped "2" gallon, it is closer to 3 gallons.
This jar is easily attributed to Richard Remmey who made stoneware in Philadelphia at the family pottery from the 1860's to the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-9).
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Carefully Tooled Rim for Tying a Cover Over it, and Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration. A double-stem of flowers fill each side and touch in the middle. Leaves and flowers in the Remmey style and rich Remmey cobalt go in all directions. Stands 14" tall.
Excellent Condition. Three chips inside the rim (1/8" to 3/4") and two flat chips on top of the rim (1/4", 1/2"). That's it! No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
