Item 12273
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this superb 2 Gallon Decorated Stoneware Cake Crock with Lid.
The form and decoration make it easily to attribute this jar to Henry Remmey, Jr. of Philadelphia, PA. He ran the family pottery in Philadelphia from the 1820's to the 1850's (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners , pp. 8-10).
Circa 1840, this beauty features a Tooled Square Rim and Ribbed Shoulder, Applied Handles, and a Brushed Cobalt Floral Garland that Travels All the Way Around the Crock. The garland sports four leaves and six blossoms on each side and a upright flower underscored by a leaf under each handle. Dark and shiny cobalt was used throughout. Measures 6 1/2" tall and 11 1/2" wide across the top.
Exceptional Condition. The base is as made. No damage of any kind. The lid has some lines on the underside in one spot (closeup). Otherwise, as made.
