Item 12186

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this uncommon 1 Gallon Stoneware Canning Jar with Handle made and stamped by "Havens, Oak-Dale."

This is the work of the Havens family of potters of Falls and Springfield Townships of Muskingham County, Ohio.  Which Havens is a question.  Oak-dale may refer to the farm of Thomas  Williams which had a pottery.  The pottery was called Oakdale and resided in Trimble Township, Athens County, Ohio.  Few pieces of their pottery are marked (Jeff Carskadden and Richard Gartley, eds., James L. Murphy's Checklist of 19th-Century Bluebird Potters and Potteries in Muskinigum County, Ohio, pp. 239-245).

This beauty features Narrow Spout with Interior ring to support a Lid, Tapered Sides, Applied Handles with Cobalt Hatching, and the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Swipes on the Front.  Stands 11 1/2" tall.

The handfuls of pieces marked by Havens from Oakdale all have the backward S on Havens.

Good Condition. Chips around the rim and base.  No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
