Item 7763
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "H. Weston, Ellenville, N.Y."
This is the work of Horace Weston, Jr., son of Horace Weston who founded the family pottery in Ellenville in 1829. He bought out his brother, Daniel, in 1869 and, with Daniel's help, ran the pottery from 1869 to 1875 (William Ketchum, Jr., Potters and Potteries of New York State, 1650-1900, pp. 140-41).
This beauty featues the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Freehand Capacity Number, and a Floral with Striped Leaf and Two Dotted Blossoms. Look at all the dots! Note the ridged from the cheesecloth used to aid in even drying of the clay. Measures 11 1/4" tall and 12" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. A minor 1/4" flake inside the rim and a faint 2" hairline from the rim on the center back (closeup). That's it! No rim or base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration. A kiln touch on the back near the base in the making.
