Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Early and Small 1/2 Gallon Ovoid Jug stamped "BOSTON."

This beauty is readily attributed to Frederick Carpenter who worked in Charlestown, Massachusetts from 1804-1827 and made pieces marked "Boston" for that market. The "BOSTON" in all capital letters and the top and bottom brown iron oxide dip which he started using in 1804 indicate Carpenter's work (New research by Pete Schriber refining older research by William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 48-49).

This jar has all the indications of being Carpenter's work: An Early Ovoid Form, Reeded Shoulder, Ochre Dip Top and Bottom, and "BOSTON" in all Capital Letters.  Stands just 9" tall.

Excellent Condition.  A flat 1/2" flake on the back of the spout, a 1/2" chip at the base, and normal surface wear of age.  That's it!  No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restortion.

If you like early Boston stoneware, here is an early 19th century piece by Carpenter in fantastic condition. Small size too!
