Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar with Lid made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features a Larger Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Classic Norton Blue Bird on a Branch Decoration in Shiny Cobalt. Stands 10 1/2" tall. Comes with the appropriate lid.
Excellent Condition. A half-dozen nibbles/chips on the lid seating ring (1/8" to 3/8") and inside the rim, and a 1/4" chip on the underside at the edge. No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. The lid is as made.
Truly a fine example of decorated Bennington stoneware.
