Item 13135
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks, is this early 3 Gallon Ovoid Jug marked "BOSTON."
This beauty is readily attributed to Frederick Carpenter who worked in Charlestown, Massachusetts from 1804-1827 and made pieces marked Boston for that market. The "BOSTON" with the larger "B" and the ochre dip indicate Carpenter's work from 1801 to 1811 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 48-49).
This Jug has all the indications of being Carpenter's work: An Early Ovoid Form, Tooled Shoulder with 9 Rings, Ochre Dip Top and Bottom, Tooled Footer, and "BOSTON" in all Capital Letters with the Larger B. Stands 15 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A dime-size chip on the right shoulder and some staining from use. No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
