Item 8251
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this extremely rare 6 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "John Schmidt, Rochester, N.Y. "
John Schmidt made stoneware in Rochester from 1869 to 1906. He focused on flower pots and jardinaires. I suspect this was his focus because of his competition in stoneware from the mighty Burger Pottery in Rochester. However, the Burger pottery closed in 1890 and, perhaps because his competition had ended, Schmidt made stoneware after 1894 (William Ketchum, Jr., Potters and Potteries of New York State, 1650-1900, 2nd ed., 1987), p. 383.
At the time of the above-mentioned book's publication in 1987, only one example of a crock stamped by Schmidt was known. I just bought this second example from a country home in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. I showed it to three long-time dealers from the Rochester area and none of them has ever seen a signed example. I have never seen one either.
