    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Superb 1 Gallon Decorated Ovoid Jar.


    This is the work of Richard Remmey who made stoneware in Philadelphia at the family pottery from the 1860's to the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-9). 
     
    Circa 1860, this beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Tall Rim, Scribed Shoulder, Rolled Footer, Applied Handles, and Brushed Comma Vining with a Dangling Tulip on Each Side.   Additional cobalt accents at the handle terminals.   All the decoration is executed in dark cobalt.  Stands 10 1/4" tall.

     

    Excellent Condition.  Minor nibbles and a flat 1/2" chip inside the rim, two minor 1/8" nibbles outside the rim, and a 1/4" chip on one handles and at the footer.  No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
