Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this rare and early 1 Gallon Ovoid Jar with Incised Decoration.

The form and decoration indicate that this jar originates around 1800-1820 in Old Bridge, New Jersey, possibly the work of the Morgan-Van Winkle Pottery.   M. Lelyn Branin, The Early Makers of Handcrated Earthenware and Stoneware in Central and Southern New Jersey, pp. 97-100.

This beauty features an Ovoid Form, Short Tooled Rim and Neck, Ringed Shoulder, Distinct Footer, and an Incised Decoration with Stem, 2 Leaves, a Cluster of 5 Seeds with Cobalt Fill.  Swirl decoration on the back.  Stands 12" tall.

The leaf and seed decoration has been attributed to Joseph Henry Remmey who may have worked for the Morgan-Van Winkle Pottery.  See Branin, pp. 70-71, and photo of a similar piece there.

Very Good Condition.  A 1" chip behind the left handle, a 1/4" flake on the footer, a small inverted Y hairline on the back near the bottom (closeup), and some scattered staining from use.  No restoration.
