    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Stoneware Merchant Jar made for "A. M. Carson & Co., Dealers in Gen. Merchandise, Butter, Eggs, & Poultry Specialties, Jackson Courthouse, W. VA."

     

    Carson ran a general store and had this jar made by the potteries in SW Pennsylvania, probably Greensboro.

     

    Dating around 1880, this beauty features a Broad Stripe at the Rim, a Broad and Wavy Stripe at the Shoulder,  7 Lines of Advertising in the Center, and the Capacity Number Framed by Leaves and Underscored by a Third Broad Stripe at the Bottom. Don't you just love the "butter, eggs, and poultry specialists"!  Complete stencil in rich and shiny cobalt. Stands 14" tall.

     

    Excellent Condition.  A minor faint 2" hairline on the back bottom that wraps under 4" (virtually invisible in the overglaze there).  Otherwise no chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.  Scattered overglaze in the making.
