Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this 3 Gallon Stoneware Semi-Ovoid Jug made and stamped by "R. W. Russell, Beaver, PA."
This is the mark of Ralph W. Russell of Beaver, Pennsylvania. Russell ran the pottery in Beaver in the 1840's to his death in 1868 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, 143-44).
This beauty features a Larger Size, Tooled Shoulder, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Cobalt Accents at the Handle Terminals, and a Brushed Cobalt Vine Across the Front. Stands 15 1/2" tall.
Good Condition. A half dozen chips on the front left and left side as shown (1/4" 1"), three places where the surface is raised (closeup 1), and three faint horizontal lines in the handle (closeup 2). No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
