Item 13087

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early Stoneware 2 Gallon Ovoid Jar stamped "BOSTON."

This beauty is readily attributed to Frederick Carpenter who worked in Charlestown, Massachusetts from 1804-1827 and made pieces marked "Boston" for that market. The "BOSTON" in all capital letters and the ochre dip which he started using in 1804 indicate Carpenter's work (New research by Pete Schriber refining older research by William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 48-49).

This jar has all the indications of being Carpenter's work: An Early Ovoid Form, Raised Rim with Reeded Texture, Open Handles, Tooled Footer, Ochre Dip Top and Bottom, and "BOSTON" in all Capital Letters.  Stands 13 1/4" tall.

Very Good Condition.  Wear and small chips on the inner lid seating ring and rim, minor chips around the footer, and a dozen small glaze flakes on the back near the bottom (closeup).  No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.

If you like early Boston stoneware, here is an early 19th century piece by Carpenter in wonderful condition. We should all look so good when we are 200 years old!
