Item 11320
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 3 Gallon Ovoid Jar stamped "BOSTON."
This beauty is readily attributed to Frederick Carpenter who worked in Charlestown, Massachusetts from 1804-1827 and made pieces marked "Boston" for that market. The "BOSTON" in all capital letters and the ochre dip which he started using in 1804 indicate Carpenter's work (New research by Pete Schriber refining older research by William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 48-49).
This jar has all the indications of being Carpenter's work: An Early Ovoid Form, Raised Rim with Elaborate Shoulder Bands, Open Handles, Tooled Footer, Ochre Dip Top and Bottom, and "BOSTON" in all Capital Letters. Stands 15 1/4" tall. The lid is a perfect size and color match, but may be later.
Very Good Condition. Some chips on the inner lid seating ring, a 2 1/2" chip inside the rim in the back, and minor chips around the footer. No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. The lid has a 1/2" chip on the edge and staining from use.
If you like early Boston stoneware, here is an early 19th century piece by Carpenter in fantastic condition. We should all look so good when we are 200 years old!
