Item 11991
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this gorgeous 1 Gallon Wax Sealer Canning Jar.
The decoration indicates that this is likely the work of Alexander and William Boughner, sons of Daniel Boughner, who ran their father's pottery in Greensboro, Pennsylvania from 1852 to 1864 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 151-155).
Dating about 1860, this beauty features the Light Gray Clay first used in Greensboro from a glacial deposit of superior clay found on the banks of the Monongehela River. It also features a Top and Bottom Stripe Framing a Large Tulip Blossom with Six Petals in Brilliant Cobalt! Stands 8 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. Minor nibbles on the inner rim, chips inside the outer rim and one 3/8" chip outside the rim, and a very faint 2 1/4" hairline from the rim on the left side (closeup). No base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
A freehand decorated jar from the early days of pottery in Greensboro.
