Item 7871
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Stoneware Jar attributed to R. J. Grier of Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Ralph Grier and family ran a pottery in Mount Jordan, Chester County, Pennsylvania from the 1840's to 1910 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 12-13).
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features a Carefully Tooled Rim to Allow a Covering to be Tied Over the Top and Under the Rim, and Three Brushed Cobalt Tulips Around the Shoulder in the Distinctive Grier Style. Strong Cobalt. Stands 10" tall.
One interesting feature is that the jar was mistakenly stamped 1 1/2 gallons and the pottery partially smoothed out the 1/2 to accurately reflect its gallon size (closeup).
Excellent Condition. Some very light runs from condensation in the kiln in the making or from staining afterward. That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
