Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Stoneware Jar attributed to R. J. Grier of Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Ralph Grier and family ran a pottery in Mount Jordan, Chester County, Pennsylvania from the 1840's to 1910 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 12-13).
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features a Carefully Tooled Rim to Allow a Covering to be Tied Over the Top and Under the Rim, and Two Brushed Cobalt Triple Florals in the Distinctive Grier Style. His flowers have four tightly connected leaves on the stem and a blossom with five petals, the center one of which is hooked. Strong cobalt. Stands 10 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. Two chips on the rim (1/4", 1/2"), and a 3/8" chip on the body near the base. No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restortion.
