Item 9370
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 2 Gallon Stoneware Polar Bear Water Cooler made by the Whites Pottery of Utica, New York.
Dating between 1890 and 1907, this piece is a wonderful example of the skill that the Whites Pottery had gained in molded stoneware during those years. This piece is not found in Christopher Bensch, The Blue and the Gray: Oneida County Stoneware.
This beauty features a Bordered Scene with Two Polar Bears on a Small Wrecked Boat at the Mouth of a Cave with Hanging Ice Cycles (possibly auditioning for a Coca-Cola commercial!). There is also a Large Bouquet of Flowers on the Back. The spigot emerges from the mouth of a lion! Stand 12 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. An impact on the bottom of the right side with some filler (closeup 1) which shows a little inside (closeup 2). Otherwise as made. A fine 3" surface drying/firing line inside in the making.
