Item 10538
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "R. W. Russell."
This is the mark of Ralph W. Russell of Beaver, Pennsylvania. Russell ran the pottery in Beaver in the 1840's to his death in 1868 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, 143-44).
This beauty features a Larger Size, Tooled Rim, Pottery Stamp, Cobalt Accents at the Handle Terminals, and Three Brushed Cobalt Fuchsia Carried Along by a Leafy Vine. The decorator spared no expense on the cobalt-- it fills the front. Stands 14 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A half dozen chips on the inner seating ring where a lid would sit (1/4" to 1/2"), and a 1 1/4" chip on the back of the right handle. That's it! No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
