Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Jar made by "Murta & Sons, Beaver, Beaver Co., PA."
This is the work of Henry Murta who, along with his sons, made stoneware in Beaver, Pennsylvania from around 1870 into the 1880's (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, p. 137)
This beauty features a Tooled Rim and Shoulder, Applied Handles, and the Company Advertising Stenciled in Large Block Letters Surrounding an Exquisite Rose Stem with Large Blossom, Leaves, and Two Buds. The capacity number surrounded by a wreath adorns the back. All the decoration is crisp and executed with dark and shiny cobalt. Strong contrast between the decoration and the light gray glaze upon which it is displayed. Stands 15" tall.
Excellent Condition. A surface-only X by the right handle on the back (closeup). That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
