Item 9618
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made in "Lyons."
This is the work of Thompson Harrington who ran the pottery in Lyons from 1852 to 1872 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 73-74).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, a Freehand Capacity Number, and a Cobalt Tulip Created by a Slip Cup. The tulip has four leaves and a blossom with 5 petals-- all with accent stripes. Stands 13 3/4" tall.
Typically Harrington Jugs have brushed cobalt decoration. This one is created with a clip cup. It is very reminiscent of decoration on Burger pieces from Rochester, N.Y. It may reflect the fact that Thompson Harrington and John Burger worked together in Rochester in the old Nathan Clark pottery from 1851 to 1854 when Burger bought out Harrington (William Ketchum, Jr., Potters and Potteries of New York State, 1650-1900, p. 377). In any case, the decoration is more typical of Burger than Harrington.
Very Good Condition. A 3/4" surface ping line on the left side of the spout toward the back, two 3/4" chips at the basae, and some light, scattered staining from use. That's it! No hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
