Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this 3 Gallon Stoneware Jar made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT.
This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin Edward Norton who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the a Larger 3 Gallon Size, Bulbous Form, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Signature Norton Double Thistle Decoration with Fancy Frillwork Executed with a Slip Cup. Typical bright and shiny Bennington cobalt on an exuberant design. Stands 13 1/4" tall.
Very Good Condition. A shallow 3/4" on the inner seating ring, a 1/4" chip inside the rim, two contiguous chips on the left handle (1/8', 5/8"), two contiguous chips on the left side bottom, and some staining on the left side from use. No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A slight recess under the decoration and on the left side in the making.
