Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Stoneware Jar made by Hamilton and Jones, Greensboro, PA.
This is the work of Frank Hamilton and John Jones who worked in Greensboro, Pennsylvania from 1865 to 1897 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
It is fresh this morning from a storage unit in Southern Ohio.
Circa 1880, this beauty features Top to Bottom Decoration. From the top down are two straight stripes and a wavy stripe at the top, the company advertising in a swirl accented with leaves in the middle, and the capacity number framed by florals and underscored by a stripe at the bottom. Additional cobalt accent at the handle terminals. All the decoration is complete and crisp. Stands 16" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 2" chip on the rim above the left handle and a 1/2" chip on the same handle. Otherwise, no rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
