Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 6 Gallon Stoneware Churn made by "Hamilton and Jones, Greensboro, PA."
This is the work of Frank Hamilton and John Jones who worked in Greensboro, Pennsylvania from 1865 to 1897 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Circa 1870, this beauty features a More Uncommon Churn Form with Tooled Rim Accommodating a Lid-Seating Ring and Top to Bottom Decoration. From the top down two straight stripes frame the rim, a wavy stripe and freehand vining adorn the shoulder, the company advertising framed by roses in the upper corners surrounds three fancies in the middle, and the capacity number flanked by leaves and underscored by a stripe display at the bottom. All the stenciling is crisp on a clean, light gray glaze. Stands 18 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1 1/2" chip on the rim. That's it! No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
