Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this superb 6 Gallon Stoneware Jar made by "A. Conrad, New Geneva, Fayette Co., PA."
Alexander Conrad ran the pottery in New Geneva from 1870-1882 before moving to Shinnston, WV (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 164-65).
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features Top to Bottom Decoration. From the top down is a stripe accenting the rim, an eagle holding a banner reading "Lion Pottery" (a moniker for Conrad's pottery) on the shoulder, a second eagle surrounded by a the company name in a circle in the middle, and the capacity number flanked by rose garland. Additional cobalt on the handle terminals. Stands. 17" tall.
Very Good Condition. A minor 3" vertical surface craze line below the "o" of pottery in the first eagle (closeup 1) and an X shaped hairline on the left side (closeup 2). No rim or base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
