Item 11834

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 5 Gallon Stoneware Crock made and stamped by "Wm. E. Warner, West Troy."

This is the mark of William E. Warner who ran a pottery in West Troy, N.Y. in the 1840's and 1850's (William C. Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 67-68).

This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and (drumroll please), a phenomenal Elderberry Plant.  I looked up native New York berries, and the American Black Elderberry would appear to be the model for this decoration.  I have included a picture above.

This elderberry plant has a detailed stem with four clusters of elderberries.  There are 140 berries!  (I do not have enough to do, so I went berry counting!).  All the decoration is executed with a slip cup with precision and artistry.  Measures 12" tall and 12 1/2" wide across the top.

Good Condition.  A 3" hairline from the rim behind the left handle (closeup 1) and a 1 3/4" hairline from the rim above the right handle (closeup 2), a 1/4" chip inside the rim, and some scattered staining.  No outer rim or base chips or restoration.
