Item 2048
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped "Pottery Works, Little West 12th St., N.Y." (Last line is partial)
This is the work of William A. MacQuoid who ran his pottery in Manhattan from 1863-1879. Macquoid created some of the most folky decorations in American stoneware history like this one here (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware , p. 63).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp and a Thistle Filling the Front. A welcome and not typical decoration. Stands 11 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/4" chip and minor nibbles on the inner seating rim where a lid would sit, a 1/4" chip at the base, and some staining on the back from use. No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
