Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this spectacular 4 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "T. & J. Ducey, Manufacturers, Petersburg, VA."

 

This is the work of Thomas and John Ducey who made stoneware in Petersburg, Virginia from 1860-1878. Parallels in "The Remarkable 19th-Century Stoneware of Virginia's Lower James River Valley", by Kurt Russ, Rob Hunter, Oliver Mueller-Heubach, and Marshall Goodman in Rob Hunter (ed.), Ceramics in America 2013, p. 250, fig. 77,

 

Provenance:  It is illustrated in Eric Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, p. 209, Fig. 5.27.  Sold at Crockerfarm on July 21, 2018.  Comes most recently from the fine collection of William H. Chapman III of Virginia.

 

This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Elaborate Floral with Nine Base Leaves supporting a Floral Stem on Each Side and Two Above, each with Six Leaves and a Blossom with 3 Petals.  Additional leaves to the sides of the decoration.   Dark, bright, and shiny cobalt which contrasts very well with the warm gray glaze. Stands 15 1/2" tall.

 

Good Condition. A nearly invisible 5" sealed line in front of the left handle and 7" behind the right handle.  A 1/4" wide chip on the rim in the back with a nearly invisible 3" line below.  You will need a magnifying glass to see these.  A drying/firing line on the underside at edge in the making that goes up 3" up the side and forms a faint y-shaped hairline on the underside with age, most of which is not visible inside (closeup).
