Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this spectacular 3 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "T. & J. Ducey, Manufacturers, Petersburg, VA."
This is the work of Thomas and John Ducey who made stoneware in Petersburg, Virginia from 1860-1878. Parallels in "The Remarkable 19th-Century Stoneware of Virginia's Lower James River Valley", by Kurt Russ, Rob Hunter, Oliver Mueller-Heubach, and Marshall Goodman in Rob Hunter (ed.), Ceramics in America 2013, p. 250, fig. 77,
Pedigree: This piece was exhibited in "Stoneware Pottery of Eastern Virginia" by the Virginia Historical Society in 2004-2005. It is illustrated in Eric Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, p. 208, Fig. 5.26. It comes most recently from the fine collection of William H. Chapman III of Virginia.
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Elaborate Floral with a Dozen Base Leaves supporting a Center Stem with Six Branches, Each with a Tree Petal Floral. Additional leaves to the left and right of the main floral. Dark, bright, and shiny cobalt which contrasts very well with the warm gray glaze. Stands 14 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. Some chipping on the bottom edge in the back. A professionally sealed 1 1/2" vertical line on the front bottom left moving left 4" as a surface craze line (closeup 1). A 3" vertical drying/firing line on the back left near the bottom with a 5" surface craze line above in the making(closeup 2). A professionally sealed 2" vertical line on the back right at the bottom moving left 3" (closeup 3) No rim chips cracks, or stains.
