Item 11473
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Stoneware Cream Pot made and stamped by "W. Roberts, Binghamton, N.Y."
This is the mark of William Roberts, son-in-law of Noah White of Whites Utica Pottery. He founded a branch of the family business in Binghamton in 1848 and ran it until 1888 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
This beauty features a Large Size, Thick Tooled Rim and Shoulder, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Huge Floral. The floral features plentiful leaves from which a blossom and a bud emerge. The decoration was executed with a slip cup in dark, bright, and shiny cobalt. Measures 11 1/2" tall and 11 1/2" wide across the top.
There is a signature made on the underside in the wet clay before firing. I cannot quite make the name out, but it ends in "aley."
Exceptional Condition. As made. No damage of any kind.
A monumental work by this maker.
