Item 12045
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Superb Four Gallon Stoneware Beer Cooler with Elaborate Urn and Flowers Decoration.
The similarity of decoration to Baltimore, Maryland and Alexandria, Virginia decoration indicate that this cooler originated in the Mid-Atlantic Region around 1830.
This beauty features an Ovoid Form with Reeded Spout, Double Handles with Wavy Cobalt Stripe Down the Middle, Framed Spigot Hole, "Beer" Printed on the Shoulder in the Front and Written in Script on the Shoulder in the Back, and Elaborate Decoration of Three Urns with Potted Plants. The largest plant in an urn occupies the entire front and branches out near the top to run down both sides. Three kinds of leaves host pillow-like blossoms. Two additional planted urns frame the center one on each side. The word "POP" was applied to the right of the front, but was erased by the potter before firing (closeup). I guess he liked beer more than pop! 😁(closeup 1) Stands 16" tall.
Very Good Condition. The right handle is professionally restored and very well done (closeup 2). Some very minor nibbles on the base. No spout chips, hairlines, cracks, or stains.
