Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Stoneware Jar made and stamped by "S. Bell & Son, Strasburg, VA."
Samuel Bell and his Son, Turner Ashby, potted together in Strasburg around 1880-1890 (H. E. Comstock, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, pp. 72-73, 74).
This beauty features a Carefully Tooled Rim, the Pottery Stamp, and Elaborate Brushed Comma Vining on Each Side. Two sets of vining mirror each other at the top and then form a "necklace" below. Stands 14 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 3/4" chip inside the rim, three chips outside the rim (1/8" to 3/8"), and a narrow 1" chip on the underside of one handle. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
