Item 12138
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare Blue and White Pitcher with the Swan Pattern on one side and the Leaping Deer Pattern on the other side.
You can find a fine discussion of this item in Terry Taylor and Terry and Kay Lowrance, Collector's Encyclopedia of Salt Glaze Stoneware, pp. 59-60, 79-80).
This beauty features a Harp-Style Border at the Top and a Band of Laurel Sprigs at the Bottom, Diamond Lattice Background, and a Medallion on Each Side Framed by Laurel Sprigs and Featuring a Swan on one side and a Leaping Deer on the other. Diffused blue coloration. Stands 8" tall.
The mold for these pitchers was in two pieces, so the potter would mix and match the sides. This was particularly possible with the swan and leaping deer pattern because, other than the center medallion, the rest of the decoration on both pitchers is identical.
Very Good Condition. A 3/8" chip on the tip of the spout. Otherwise, as made.
