Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Stoneware Pitcher attributed to R. J. Grier of Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Ralph Grier and family ran a pottery in Mount Jordan, Chester County, Pennsylvania from the 1840's to 1910 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 12-13).
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Semi-Squared Rim, Pinched Spout, Tall Neck, Tooled Shoulder, Bulbous Body, Footer, Applied Handle with Cobalt Accent, and Generous Cobalt Freehand Decoration. Leaves flank the spout and with one more on the left and right side. The body is graced by large sideways tulip with fourteen leaves and a blossom with seven petals. Each side sports an additional leaf. Stands 11 1/4" tall.
Very Good Condition. Two 1/2" chips inside the rim. No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
