Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Jug made and stamped by "N White & Co., Binghamton."
This is one of the marks of William Roberts, son-in-law of Noah White of Whites Pottery in Utica, N.Y. He founded a branch of the family business in Binghamton in 1848 for his father-in-law, Noah White, and ran it until 1888 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware , p. 71).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and an Elaborate Poppy Decoration for which this pottery was known. The poppy features seven base leaves and a blossom with a center of five sections surrounded by eight dotted petals. The decoration is executed with a slip cup in bright and shiny cobalt. Stands 14 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A minor 3/16" flake on the left side of the spout and a dime-size rust stain on the back at the bottom. Otherwise, as made.
