Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "N. A. White & Son, Utica, N.Y."
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware , pp. 69-70).
Dating about 1870, this beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and Paddletail Bird on an Orchid Branch. This is one of White's signature decorations and a perennial favorite with collectors. An abundance of rich cobalt blue. The bird is 8 /2" from the tip of his beak to the tip of his tail. The branch has 5 leaves, a blossom and 7 buds. Brilliant cobalt throughout the decoration. Measures 11" tall and 12" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. Residual water glass staining inside and traces outside. That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A small kiln touch on the bottom leaves of the branch in the making.
