Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Jar made and stamped by the "N. A. White & Son, Utica N.Y."
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery in Utica from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 69-70).
Dating about 1870, this beauty features a Larger Size, Pottery Stamp, and Freehand Orchid Plant in Strong Cobalt! The plant has four stripes leaves and a blossom with two petals, all in a combination of slip cup and brush-applied cobalt. Speaking of which, the cobalt is very bold and shiny. Stands 12 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/4" chip and some minor nibbles inside the rim, a 1/2" chip on the rim in th back, and a small stain to the left of the decoration. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
