Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderfu 2 Gallon Decorated Jug made and stamped by "M. Woodruff, Cortland."

This is the work of Madison Woodruff who ran the pottery in Cortland, New York from 1849-1885 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).

This beauty sports a Tall and Narrow Form, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Two Incised X's with Cobalt Fill, and a Tall Brushed Cobalt Orchid.  The orchid has two leaves and blossom with twelve petals.  Stands 14 1/2" tall.

The X on a jug stands for the number of times the liquor within was distilled.  This jug was made for liquor distilled two times-- thus the two X's.

Excellent Condition.  A 3/8" chip on the left side of the spout and right side of the handle, and a 1" chip on the underside at the edge.  No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
