Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Ovoid Jug made and stamped by "Jacob Caire & Co, Poughkeepsie, N.Y."
This is the mark of Jacob Caire who ran his father's (John Caire) second pottery in Poughkeepsie from 1845 to 1853 when it closed (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware , p. 65).
This beauty features the early Ovoid Form, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Brushed Cobalt Tulip. The tulip has 9 leaves and a dotted blossom with 8 petals. Stands 12" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/4" chip on the spout back by the handle. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Leans slightly right in the making, and the horizontal rings created in the making clearly show. Lot's of character!
