Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features a Larger 3 Gallon Size, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Classic Pheasant Perched on a Stump Decoration. The decoration is expertly drawn with the pheasant looking over his shoulder, sporting long tail feathers. The stump has a lot of character and some ground cover. Strong and shiny cobalt in the making. Stands 13" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/4" chip and minor nibbles on the inner lid seating ring, and a tiny stain by the stump. That's it! No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or stains. A horizontal surface drying/firing line near the base on the left side in the making (closeup).
