Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this rare 1 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar made and stamped by the "Hudson River Pottery, West 12th Street, Roche Brothers Agts., 34 Fulton St."
This pottery belonged to the brothers Edward and John Roche who ran it from 1849 to 1858 when it was sold to Louis Lehman and then to William MacQuoid (William Ketchum, Jr., Potters and Potteries of New York State, 1650-1900, pp. 61-62).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp in Four Lines and Brushed with Cobalt, and a Tulip with Four Leaves and a Blossom with 5 Petals, one of which is dotted. This tulip is a distinctive design of this pottery. Simple but commanding! Stands 11" tall.
Very Good Condition. Chips and wear around the inner lid-seating ring, a minor 1/8" nibble on the left handle, and some staining from use. Surface only semi-circular drying/firing line on the bottom in the making as shown.
